What is Iwave?

Iwave is a new technology from Vocaltec, the makers of the popular Internet program Iphone, which allows you to play audio over the Internet as it downloads. Iwave requires a 486 or higher, there is no Macintosh version. Iwave allows you to play audio on demand over the Internet. Ordinarily to play sound files from the Internet you must first download the file completely, which usually takes quite a long time to download even the shortest sound files. Using the a special Iwave player you can now listen to files from the Internet which have been compressed in Iwave format as they download. You no longer have to wait for the entire file to reach your computer and hard drive before you can listen to it. The Iwave player is just a little over 1 MB to download and comes with a free evaluation copy of the lastest version of Iphone.

Why is Iwave better than RealAudio?

Iwave is very similar to another sound compression/player format that's really been gathering attention over the past several months. Iwave does not have all of the features of RealAudio, which may beat Iwave in sound quality and in it's ability to play live audio broadcasts, but it does have several important advantages :

So we have nothing but praise for Vocaltec, for an excellent program and system for making audio on demand accessible to anyone who has something to say!
