Strange Days Movie Review

Review by Adolf Chavez

I really enjoyed this movie. The setting is the future, just before the year 2000. The story takes place in Los Angeles. The technology has been created to record people's experiences using a device called SQUID and to play them back with playback devices(decks). To quote the main character of the movie "This is not like TV only better. This is life. It's a piece of somebody's life. Pure and uncut, straight from the cerebral cortex. You're there. You're doing it, seeing it, hearing it... feeling it." The technology becomes blackmarket, an electronic drug of the future. A thriving market develops for recordings of the wildest experiences, sex, robbery, murder. The main character, a former cop, now sells "experiences." The story winds through a truly bizarre murder involving the technology. The movie has some spectacular special effects, creating downtown Los Angeles on New Years Eve, the year 2000. If you've ever been to downtown Los Angeles you'll find the helicopter views of downtown filled with thousands of people on the streets amazing. The movie also touchs interestingly on racial tensions in LA, evoking memories of the LA riots. Strange Days is filled with action scenes with enough intrigue mixed in to make it interesting. With the rapid evolution of the Internet and online services, and the explosive growth of technology on the Web, one has to wonder where we're headed. I found it interesting because it's as if the future forseen in the movie seems somewhat plausible, as computers get faster, and the realities that they can create become more and more immersive. Check out Strange Days, it's really a wild ride.
