Please note that this FAQ is not about Upjohn's "Caverject." This is a custom-made prescription known as "PAP-PHE-PGE." Your urologist should know about it. If not, find one who is aware of the latest technologies.

  1. What is penile injection therapy?
It is an approved method of obtaining and keeping a satisfactory erection.
  2. How does it work?
A prescription (liquid) is injected directly into your penis. This is done with same type of needle used for insulin.
  3. It sounds painful. Is it?
Actually, it sounds much worse than it, in fact, is. The idea of putting a needle into your penis is quite disconcerting. But there is very little physical discomfort. I felt that I would never adjust to it; but after the first 2 or 3 times I realized there was nothing to it. Now I do it without a second thought.
  4. Is it dangerous?
It can be. Apparently the greatest danger lies in its mis-use. You MUST follow the physician's instructions TO THE LETTER! Failure to do so could result in serious damage to your penis, a trip to the Emergency Room, and possibly the need for surgery! These are not very pleasant thoughts.
  5. Are there any side-effects?
As with most any medication there can be. I have not had any whatsoever. And I gather that most men don't.
  6. How often can you use it?
My doctor says no more than 1 dose, 3 times a week. And not on consecutive days. He was not, however, totally inflexible on this. You and your physician will have to work out a schedule.
  7. What sort of doctor should I see?
A urologist seems to be the most obvious choice. That is what mine is.
  8. Does it have any affect on arousal or sex drive?
This is difficult to answer. Sexual feeling and response vary greatly from one man to the next and are influenced by many other factors. These include fatique, use of other medications, general health, etc. I've always had a great appetite for sex and continue to.
  9. What about orgasms?
In my case there were no changes. If 2 in an hour is normal for you, it should remain the same.
  10. Is this medication addicitve?
There are not any indications (that I am aware of) of addictiveness or physical dependency. I do, however, wonder about psychological dependency. More research needs to be done in this area.
  11. How expensive is it?
Like most good things in life, it is not cheap. There will be 2 or 3 office visits, some routine blood work, and the medication itself. I small vial set me back $170. But, as you use a miniscule amount each time, the cost-per-dose should be fairly low. Insurance may (or may not) cover some of the expense.
  12. How well does it work?
In a word: VERY. It is the closest thing yet to the proverbial "Fountain of Youth." At age 47 I had no problem obtaining normal erections. Although I admit I'm not 18! I could not resist the idea of remaining erect for 4 hours. Even after 2 or 3 orgasms!! This is something that most men much younger than me cannot do. It is certainly worth considering.
