10 inches of Mercury (HG) is the vacuum required to pull mercury up a glass column a total of 10 inches. the other measurement is in centimeters of Mercury which is a higher number by a factor of 2.54, i.e. 10 inches of HG is equivalent to 25.4 centimeters.

If you are using 10 inches of mercury you are eventually going to hurt your self. I would not recommend going over 4-5 inches of HG. If you do the damage will eventually occur.
