By all means, start out slow!, get a cheap electronic timer, from Radio Shack, or other source.
Micronta makes a good timer, and cheap.
Begin by washing the area well, use lots of soap, and dry off.
Use a good lubricant, mine is Alboline, mostly vaseline, with other stuff in it. Don't stint, a dry area can pinch the skin as the vacuum gets going.
I started out by using 3" vacuum, and 5 minutes time. Don't get in a hurry! Morning and evening usually.
At the end of the time, let the vacuum off, and massage the entire area, to ge the blood going which can stop under vacuum, and that is quite bad!
After about a week, move up to 4" vacuum, and the same daily ritual.
After about 3 months, I have gone to 5" vacuum, and 2- 10 minute sessions.
Started out with 6 1/2 ", and now have over 7 1/4", with an increase in diameter.
It depends on the time you have but I suggest that you not go to some of the lengths others here do, until you are well along with previous sessions.
I plan on going to 25 minutes total a day next week, but my wife is already bitching about the size I am, with continuing growth.
She has been in favor of my doing it, since, as I told you, I'm older, and I found that my cock was shrinking, when we got married, I had a full 7 1/2", and as of last few moths, I only had 6 1/2.
