Nature's Alternative to Viagra - L-Arginine??

I've read recently that medical research in the US is
currently looking at the Amino Acid L-Arginine (in
particular at its presence in sunflower seeds - evidently the highest source of Arginine)
as a possible alternative to Viagra.
Does anyone know if this is true and what the real effects of Arginine are?
Is it safe to take in larger doses that can be obtained in tablet form?
Grateful for any help on this.
