You actually oil the piston and not the motor on the CTC XL-2000 (I'm sure the XL-1000 is the same). You're supposed to put a drop of oil on the "nipple" of the piston after every 10 hours of use. 30 wt autograde oil is suggested.

As for the noise... with the unit in another room, with the door closed, and about 15-20 feet away, it sounds something like a louder than normal pendulum clock. It isn't too bad but it does make noise... you couldn't pump in the house with someone and them not know that something was up.

As for the vacuum control, it is a sort of screw twist-knob affair... not too high-tech. The vacuum "gauge" (if you can call it that), is a slightly larger section of tubing which collapses. The amount of collapse indicates the vacuum level... collapsed all the way equals too much vacuum and collapsed halfway is about right. Rather primitive. I've given thought to grafting a real pressure gauge into the line.

I've pumped with this unit for over 6 hours straight (with minimal breaks) and haven't gotten any blisters yet... and I'm rather prone to them.

As I said before, it is an effective pump but hardly a pretty one.
