Has anyone pumped with a Gauge?

Just wondering if anyone has pumped with the vacuum gauge.
If so what pressure is normal to use? Also I notice that
I can handle a bit more pressure with water in the tube,
has anyone with the gauge noticed this as well, and if so
what is the prpessure difference?
