Lubrication is another key. I use Vaseline Intensive Care, with Alpha Hydroxy, generously before putting on the hair gel.
I rub it in real well. I made my own system and use a piece of bike tube for a gasket.
I can go to 15 in. of merc. (slowly) and not get blisters.
