re. Which pump:
For starting out I'd recommend you either make your own (see the URL for "bigger's" instructions) or buy a manual system which includes two flared cylinders with quick release valves and a brass pump, such as the sponsor of this forum sells.

If you get stoked on pumping, then you can look at getting a pulsating electric system such as the CTC XL2000, which pumps you up bigger and faster, with better circulation so you can get harder while pumped.

re. Techniques:
* take it easy at first, go for 15 - 30 min, gradually build up to 1 or 2 hours, about every other day
* take a week off pumping now and then, you'll find you pump up much bigger next time
* keep the pressure fairly light, especially at first
* vary the pressure up and down, this improves circulation (kind of like the ctc pump)
* pump with warm water in the tube, and keep the tube warm with your hands or warm towel, or pump in the bathtub (unless you're using an electric system, of course!)
* milk (jelq) before pumping, and when you take a break from the tube
* go into your tube semi-hard or even soft, you'll pump up faster that way
* after packing your tube, get out, milk, then go back in and re-pack that tube before going into the next larger tube -- repacking makes your pump more "solid"
* pay attention to how pumping feels at each stage, and learn to read your feelings so you don't overpump -- the skin shouldn't burn, you should feel a good stretch deep inside as the suspensory ligament stretches
