An erection that wouldn't go down for 3 days would injure the vasculature of the penis
permanently, resulting in impotence. Such a condition is called priapism.
Yohimbine has been tested multiple times in clinical settings for the treatment of impotence,
and it has been shown to be no better than placebos at promoting erection. In addition, in high
doses, it is a sympathetic antagonist that can decrease peripheral vascular tone, causing the
heart to work harder. In some people, this can precipitate heart attacks.
