I don't have mine sewn around the edges. Just make sure you get thick enough leather that it doesn't want to roll or fold when formed into a tube and size the tube slightly smaller than a ring that goes on snuggly. The ruber Orings were great for getting used to the act of getting balls through a ring and sometimes if a find it difficult to get started in the first ring...I put on a rubber oring first and then after putting on a stell one, i pull off the rubber one. The disadvantage to the rubber ones is that they deflect in shape and so they can shift and pull over each other at times. I would only recommend them to beginners. I got the rubber orings in an oring kit I bought from Eastwood Automotive.
