I would certainly agree that once you "get your inch," moving beyond that is a real bitch.
If you're already pumping, why not use a hose clamp on your vacuum tube and hang weight from that? Anybody tried? There's a company in the UK that sells this type of device. They show a picture of a guy hanging a 20-lb fire extinguisher.
(If that doesn't bring out the flamers here, what will?)
