I'll try to cover a couple of questions here. I am speaking of the XL-2000 (though, from pictures of the XL-1000, I see no differences).

The oil, as someone else indicated, leaks from the piston arm.

As for the "surgery" I indicated, I made some modifications to the tubing so that I could use standard cylinders and connectors with the CTC pump. Unless you make similar changes, you'll be stuck using the crappy cylinders from CTC.

The easiest way to modify this would be to take the section of tubing that would normally connect to the CTC cylinder and screw a standard female connector into it. Then a length of tubing with standard male connectors can be plugged into it allowing you to use standard cylinders. Not that difficult really though I had to sit and think on it for a minute or two to figure out the best way to set this up. And I had to as the crappy cylinder that shipped with the CTC unit broke while trying to hook it up to their tubing.
