It would also be advisable to have your electric pump plugged into an outlet protected by a ground fault interrupt (GFI) circuit breaker. If the GFI breaker detects any leakage of current to ground, it will shut off instantly.

That's what current national wiring codes require for bathroom and kitchen outlets, but you may not have them if your place is over 10-15 yrs old. GFI outlets usually have two little buttons between the two plugs marked "test" and "reset."
